Did you know that studies have shown some women get more pleasure from buying a handbag than any other item? But what is it about a gorgeous leather tote that gets our pulses racing? For many, the handbag is a symbol of women’s social independence. Before sea and rail travel, women were largely restricted to the home so there wasn’t as much of a need for a leather bag to transport their belongings. The increase in travel caused a boom in the desire and necessity for stylish leather luggage, and with that came the evolution of the handbag. As women became more socially and later financially independent, the handbag became synonymous with their independence. Not just a practical item, the leather handbag takes many forms in bucket bags, totes, shoulder bags, satchels and cross-overs. It’s a fashion statement with a history.
