Common Questions About Leather Wash Bag Dopp Kits

What is a Dopp Kit?
‘Dopp Kit’ is an American term for a toiletry bag. The name derives from the toiletry bag produced by the leather goods manufacturer Charles Doppelt, in 1926, a product that became ubiquitous as a result of its adoption by the U.S. military in World War 2. The bag was originally marketed as a ‘toilet bag’ but customers were uncomfortable with using the word ‘toilet’ and so the bag came to be known as a Dopp Kit.

What is the difference between a Dopp Kit and a Toiletry Bag?
A Dopp Kit is an American term for a toiletry bag; there is no difference between the two.

What should you keep in your Dopp Kit?
You are of course entitled to keep whatever you want in your Dopp Kit, but the intention behind the design is that when you are travelling, you are able to keep all your personal hygiene products in one place. The advantage of a Dopp Kit is that you need only take one small bag with you to the bathroom and that you don’t have to search your entire suitcase for the items that you need. Common items that people put in their Dopp Kit include: toothbrush, toothpaste and dental floss, sanitary products, razor, shaving brush and shaving cream, deodorant, soap and shampoo, perfumes and moisturisers, nail scissors, tweezers, hairbrush and contact lenses.

Is leather a good choice for a Dopp Kit?
A Dopp Kit has to withstand a lot of punishment, such as hurried packing and being stuffed, last minute, into a bag or
suitcase. Full grain leather is a material that won’t let you down: it won’t tear, it won’t lose its shape and it will last a lifetime, so, yes, it’s a great choice for a Dopp Kit.

Are leather Dopp Kits waterproof?
Leather is a natural, organic material and it is permeable. You can’t take a leather Dopp Kit in the shower and expect the contents to remain dry, however, if used in a conventional way a leather Dopp Kit will withstand splashes and moisture without any problem. Surface moisture should be removed from your leather Dopp Kit using a dry cloth.

Spacious and Stylish
MAHI Wash bags are hand-made from the same high-quality components that we use on all our products: rich, vegetable dyed, full-grain leather exteriors, waterproof nylon interiors, sturdy YKK zips and solid brass fittings. The Classic Wash bag is an exercise in spacious simplicity and comes in vintage brown and ebony black or as a waxed canvas combo in navy blue, khaki green or grey. Alternatively, the Raleigh, modelled on our travel holdall, features a double compartment, enabling you to separate your toiletries. If you like to travel accompanied by your favourite cosmetics, take a look at our cosmetics cases, available in large and small or as a gift set. If you’re giving one of our wash bags as a gift, you can include a special message on the interior as well as personalizing the exterior with up to three initials.

Hang out with MAHI
The Harvard Hanging Wash bag, inspired by our satchel of the same name, and the Pioneer Hanging Wash bag, combine stylish full-grain leather exteriors with waterproof interiors, a range of zippered compartments and hanging hooks for easy organisation and access, ideal for hotel bathroom or streamside camping. Every MAHI comes with a thirty-day money back guarantee and $1.50 from the sale of each MAHI goes to Frank Water, a UK based charity which has helped thousands of people gain access to clean water since 2005.
