What's the Difference Between Satchels & Messenger Bags?
Satchels have been around for quite some time now, predating the discovery of the Americas and having been used by politicians in the era of the Roman Empire; they called it Loculus, meaning ‘little place’ and used satchels to carry personal belongs and food while on the go. Fast-forward through history and satchels would go on to become a stylish staple for British students in the 1950’s & 60’s. Messenger bags came about around this time too, and were most commonly used by postmen, messengers (hence the name), and couriers in the 50’s; they later became fashionable in the 70’s. Satchel bags, originally, were always made from leather & messenger bags were typically made from canvas.
Today there isn’t much difference between the two; both bags are commonly used as cross body bags and come in a range of materials today. Satchels and Messenger bags are both admired for their professional, sophisticated and stylish appearances. They’ve been around long enough to claim a title of timeless design.
